Christianity is one of six accepted religions in Indonesia, the world’s largest Muslim majority country. Christians are just 11% of the population. With 280 million people across three time zones, experiences vary widely. Some areas, like Java, have large, open churches, while others, such as western Sumatra and Aceh, have few Christians and no churches. Persecution exists in many forms, including social exclusion, church disruptions, and attacks. Strict laws make registering new churches nearly impossible, and Christians often face discrimination in jobs, scholarships, and opportunities. 86% of Muslims told the Pew Research Center it is very important to be Muslim to be truly Indonesian.
