“Thanks to you, I am free again!”
In Pakistan, accusations of blasphemy can destroy lives in an instant.
Sohail*, a Christian husband and father of four daughters, was living quietly in a rural village when his life suddenly changed. After leaving his cell phone unattended one day, a Muslim acquaintance allegedly used it to share content insulting the Prophet Muhammad. Villagers quickly accused Sohail, and within two days he was arrested and sentenced under Pakistan’s controversial blasphemy laws.
For many Christians in Pakistan, these laws create a constant atmosphere of fear. Human rights organizations and international observers have long criticized the legislation, noting that accusations often require little evidence and are frequently used to settle personal disputes. Those accused can face life imprisonment, violence, or even death.
While Sohail remained in prison, his family lost everything. Without an income or support from relatives, his wife and daughters were forced from their home and left struggling to survive.
Local ICR partners learned of the situation and immediately stepped in. They helped Sohail’s family relocate to safety, provided financial support for rent and food, and secured legal representation for his case. Over the next two years, a Christian lawyer fought tirelessly for Sohail’s release through a series of court hearings where the stakes remained painfully high.
In August 2022, Sohail was finally acquitted and reunited with his family.
“Without this help, I would still be in prison and my family would be devastated,” Sohail shared.
Today, the family is rebuilding their lives, though fear still remains. They have not returned to their village.
According to local ministry leaders, blasphemy accusations continue to affect vulnerable Christian communities across Pakistan, particularly among those with limited education and economic opportunity. Many believers live with the awareness that a false accusation could come at any time.
Even in these difficult circumstances, local churches and ministry partners continue providing practical aid, legal support, discipleship, and encouragement to persecuted believers who have nowhere else to turn.
