Hundreds are dead or missing as catastrophic flooding devastates communities along the Himalayan border. ICR is working to establish communication with ministry partners in the region.

Catastrophic flash flooding struck the Himalayan border region of Nepal and China on August 26, leaving widespread destruction and a rapidly growing human toll.

Preliminary analysis indicates that a massive section of glacier collapsed high in the Himalayas, sending ice and rock into the river system below. The resulting surge of water, mud, rock, and debris rushed through narrow mountain valleys with devastating force. Scientists and authorities are continuing to investigate the precise sequence of events that caused the disaster.

Communities Devastated

As rescue operations continue, at least 160 people have been reported dead, with hundreds more still missing across Nepal and Tibet. The number is expected to change as rescuers reach affected areas and more information becomes available.

Entire communities along the flood’s path have been affected. Homes have been destroyed, roads and bridges swept away, and hydropower facilities damaged. In the mountainous terrain, destroyed transportation routes and difficult weather conditions are also complicating efforts to reach survivors and search for those still missing.

Behind every number are families who have lost loved ones, homes, livelihoods, and communities.

Waiting to Hear From Our Partners

ICR has ministry partners in this region, and we are working to establish communication with them.

At this time, communication is slow and sporadic. Because of the conditions on the ground, we do not yet have a complete picture of how our partners, their churches, or the communities they serve have been affected.

We do not want to speculate about needs before hearing directly from those who are there.

As communication becomes possible and reliable information reaches us, we will provide updates about our partners and specific opportunities to help.

Pray for families grieving loved ones and for those anxiously waiting for news about people who remain missing. Pray for rescue workers navigating dangerous conditions and for those who have suddenly found themselves without homes or basic necessities.

Please also pray for ICR’s ministry partners and churches throughout the affected region. Pray for their safety, for wisdom as they respond, and for opportunities for the Church to care for people experiencing tremendous loss.
