Iran: Historic Protestant Churches Face New Pressure
Two historic church properties are under threat as pressure on evangelical believers continues to grow.
July 2, 2026

For generations, Protestant churches have quietly served Christian communities in Iran despite increasing restrictions. Today, two historic congregations are facing new challenges that many Christian leaders say reflect growing pressure on evangelical believers across the country.

According to reporting by The Free Press, Iranian authorities are moving to seize St. Peter Evangelical Church in Tehran, one of the country’s oldest Protestant churches. Founded in 1876, the church has remained a visible part of Iran’s Christian community for nearly 150 years. Approximately twenty Christian families currently live on the church property and now face possible eviction if the seizure moves forward.

The reported confiscation follows another troubling event only weeks earlier. In early June, a historic evangelical church building in Mashhad was demolished despite its designation as a protected national heritage site. According to HRANA (Human Rights Activists News Agency), the church had not held services for many years after being forced to close by authorities, but it remained an important symbol of the evangelical community in the city. Former members described it as a place of worship, refuge, and lasting spiritual significance.

These events are not isolated.

Since the 1979 Islamic Revolution, evangelical churches in Iran have faced increasing restrictions, property confiscations, and limitations on ministry. Churches that once held Persian-language services have steadily disappeared, making it increasingly difficult for Muslim-background believers to gather openly for worship and discipleship. According to a joint 2026 report by Article18, Open Doors, Christian Solidarity Worldwide (CSW), and Middle East Concern, arrests and legal pressure against Christians have increased in recent years.

The international Christian community has also expressed concern. On June 18, the World Council of Churches issued a statement expressing “profound sorrow and deep concern” over the demolition in Mashhad and the reported pressure surrounding St. Peter Evangelical Church. The organization called on Iranian authorities to halt any confiscation of church property and urged the international community to advocate for Iran’s Christian minority.

Despite these challenges, the Church in Iran continues to endure.

Believers continue meeting, discipling one another, and faithfully following Christ, often under significant pressure. While buildings may be threatened, the gospel continues to transform lives, and the Church remains a witness to God’s faithfulness throughout the country.
