Yemenis have been living in a war zone since 2015, with the country’s rule being divided between the Internationally Recognized Government (IRG), backed by Saudi Arabia, and Iran-affiliated Houthis. Each year, it seems the conditions grow worse. The humanitarian situation is considered one of the worst in the world, because of widespread hunger, disease, and civilian deaths.
One-third of the Yemeni population is now facing extreme hunger, while 2.2 million Yemeni children under the age of five need treatment for acute malnutrition. Meanwhile, humanitarian efforts in the region have slowed due to loss of funding and disagreements with the Houthi-controlled areas of northern Yemen. Additionally, the country saw at least 411 civilian casualties in 2023, and 35,536 households face restricted access to health care, education, first responders, or worship.
