The countries that make up North Africa – Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt – have a lot in common. They are Muslim majority and Arabic-speaking, though the dialects are different. In every place, converts who leave Islam suffer terrible social pressure. The parts of North Africa under Islamist control are extremely dangerous for Christians. In other places, there is an established and overt Christian presence. In some countries, the governments are less concerned about Christian activity, while in another, the government has closed over 40 churches, leaving only three open. Even in countries where conversion from Islam is not a legal offense, converts still risk arrest and police interrogation.
