Moroccan Christians anticipate a season of greater openness. Although Christians are closely monitored, they have little to fear from the authorities. Persecution comes from strict Muslim family members, Muslim society, or the local mosque.

There are only three topics that will get someone in trouble: criticizing Islam, the king, or voicing opposition to the politically disputed Western Sahara region.

In another positive step, last year the country recognized the Amazigh (Berber) New Year’s Day as an official holiday. This is an important sign for the approximately 40% of the population who belong to this people group. It shows that Morocco is no longer enforcing Arabization but is acknowledging minorities.
